Eldon Dingler

We learned recently that Eldon Thomas Dingler of Sherwood, Arkansas, passed away August 8, 2019. He was 87. His obituary (as published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette) is copied below:

Eldon Thomas Dingler, 87, passed away August 8, 2019. Eldon was the 2nd of 4 children born to Luther & Blanche Dingler. His brothers, Glenn and Doyce, and sister, Euvice, are still with us today and doing well.

Eldon grew up in the small town of Kirby, Arkansas on a farm where the motto was “we eat what we grow and raise.” Born at home, into a family with very little means, Eldon & his brothers and sister went on to lead very productive lives with deep Family & Christian ties.

After graduation from Kirby High School, Eldon did as many did in the day, joined the U.S. Navy and became a Veteran of the Korean War. Upon completion of his commitment to the country, Eldon returned to Arkansas and enrolled at Henderson State University. It was here where he met his wife, Diane, and received his Degree in Economics.

Eldon married Diane on June 20, 1959. They have two children, Tom & Brett; grandchildren, Evans, Drew, Brooke & Logan; & great-grandchildren, Emery & Oliver.

After Graduation from HSU and getting married, Eldon & Diane moved to Little Rock where Eldon joined the Administrative team at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center as a staff accountant. After a lengthy & very distinguished career with SVI, Eldon retired after 30 years as the Chief Financial Officer & Interim CEO.

After Eldon & Diane retired, they spent the next 20 years traveling all over the world, which was a lifelong dream. Their love was being around their children and grandchildren, treating them to nice family vacations at the beach.

Eldon & Diane were members of Lakewood Methodist Church, where Eldon served on numerous committees for over 40 years and formed lifetime bonds & friendships. He was also a founding member of the Little Rock Executive Association where he served as President and to this day is an honorary lifelong member.

The family would like to invite everyone out for visitation at Smith North Little Rock Funeral Home on Monday, August 12th from 5-7 p.m. A Memorial Service celebrating Eldon’s life will be held at Smith NLR Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 13 beginning at 11 a.m. A private family burial will be held following the memorial. Services will be held by Dr. Luke Conway & Dr. Harold Mitchell. Memorials may be made in Eldon’s name to Lakewood Methodist Church or to Alzheimer’s Arkansas. Louise Dingler SmithWe are sad to share that Louis Dingler Smith passed away yesterday.  Louise was a regular attendee of the annual reunion, and it always felt like the reunion couldn’t start until the ladies from Mobile arrived. She will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her children, Selma and Ed, and the entire family.

A memorial service will be held in Mobile, Alabama on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Ashland Place United Methodist Church (15 Wisteria Avenue, Mobile, Alabama, 36607), followed by a visitation in the church parlor. A graveside service will be held at South Cemetery in Blountsville, Alabama on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Noon.

The obituary from the Mobile Register and Legacy.com is copied below. The obituary and guest book are online at Legacy.com.

Born in Blountsville, Alabama, Louise was the third of four sisters born to Era Estelle “Belle” Whitaker Dingler and Edd Dingler. She grew up in Marion, Alabama, graduated from Perry County High School in 1942, and then Judson College in 1946 with a bachelor’s degree in Speech and English.

She married William Hobson Smith prior to his deployment to the South Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army in WWII. After the war, they both entered the University of Virginia where she pursued her master’s degree. The death of her father required that they return to Alabama where she entered the University of Alabama and received her master’s degree in English Literature.

Louise’s professional life began as a teacher at Cove Elementary School in Panama City, Florida. When she moved to Mobile in 1962, she taught English at Murphy High School. In 1965, she was one of the first teachers hired at the University of South Alabama and remained there until she retired in 1992. She loved and studied the Renaissance period and the Age of Enlightenment and traveled with USA’s British Studies Program as a student just for the love of learning.

More than anything, Louise was a true Southerner. However, while she was grounded in and steeped in Southern traditions, she was a progressive and forward-thinking woman. She was an advocate for equal rights for all, especially women, and was a part of a civil lawsuit challenging sex discrimination at the University of South Alabama in the 1980s. She never stopped seeking to improve herself and the world and, in the 1970s, she sought and was awarded one of only 100 grants offered nationwide to build one of two solar houses in Alabama which still stands today.

Having grown up during the Depression and knowing hard times, Louise used education and her natural curiosity to discover a life other than that offered by her immediate environment. She found and developed a great love of all things beautiful and particularly enjoyed gardening, art, entertaining, and travel.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William Hobson Smith, her infant daughter, Selma Louise Dingler Smith, and two sisters Jessie Dingler Boggs (Mrs. M. Donald) and Lavonda Irene “Bonnie” Waller (Mrs. Rufus Matthew). She is survived by her oldest sister, Inez Dingler Criminale (Mrs. George C.), her children, Selma Louise Dingler Smith and Edward Lee Dingler Smith, his wife, Melanie Love Smith, three granddaughters, Clare Whitaker Smith, Caroline Love Smith, and Isabel Burnham Smith, and step-granddaughters, Dr. Kristin Nicole LeMaitre and her husband Dr. Andrew Barker and Melissa Renee LeMaitre.

A memorial service will be held in Mobile, Alabama on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Ashland Place United Methodist Church, 15 Wisteria Avenue, Mobile, Alabama, 36607, followed by a visitation in the church parlor. A graveside service will be held at South Cemetery in Blountsville, Alabama on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Noon.

Jessie Marie Dingler

May 18, 1933 – August 24, 2013

Jessie Marie Dingler, 80, of North Little Rock departed this life on Saturday, August 24, 2013.  She was born May 18, 1933, in Ida, LA, to the late Harvey and Elsie Gilbert.  On November 4, 1955, Jessie married Glenn Dingler and together they had three sons.  They were married 57 years.  She loved family gatherings, and getting together with friends.

Jessie enjoyed staying busy, whether working at the AR Revenue Department, AR State Legislature, Dillard’s Department Store, or JC Penney, or in her yard.  Jessie appreciated knick-knacks and other décor that turned a house into a home.  She even owned a gift shop called Arcade Gifts and Accents for over 6 years in West Little Rock.  An Arkansas Democrat Profile on Business article stated, “The gift business has always been fascinating to Jessie, even before she opened her store.  She said that in working two consecutive Christmases at Dillard’s Department Store, she specifically asked to be placed in the gift department.”  Jessie loved serving her customers, saying, “It’s exciting to find that one special thing for them.”

Church was very important to Jessie.  She was active in her church, Windsong Church of Christ, where she was also a member of WOW (Women of Windsong).  Jessie served with her husband in a number of overseas mission trips, teaching English as a second language with the Bible. In addition to her parents, Jessie was preceded in death by three brothers James Gilbert, Jimmy Ray Gilbert, and Tommy Gilbert.  She is survived by her husband, Glenn Dingler of North Little Rock; her three sons, Robert, Michael, and Steven, and their wives; three grandchildren and four grand-dogs; two sisters, Sue Braun and Mary Albright, and their husbands; one brother, John Gilbert and his wife; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to thank the Sherwood Nursing & Rehabilitation staff, Odyssey Hospice staff, and Hospice Home Care staff for their comfort, support, and friendship.  Her last days were peaceful, and she was surrounded by her family, which she held dear.

Memorials can be sent to the Southern Christian Home, a mission that serves school-age children (P.O. Box 649, Morrilton, AR 72110); Partners in Progress, a medical mission to take staff and supplies up rivers in third world countries and sponsored by Windsong Church of Christ (P.O. Box 13989, Maumelle, AR 72113), or the Alzheimer’s Association (10002 West Markham, Little Rock, AR 72205).
